Five Shows to See in June

The summer is upon us, and we have a list of five shows in June that you should not miss. Incredibly, none of these shows are sold out, but they should be, and there’s a good chance that several of them will be in the near future. The list includes some old school heroes and up and coming favorites across a variety of genres. We’ll keep it brief, but we’ve provided a few words about why each show comes highly recommended.

1. Sam Prekop with Abram Shook – June 3 – Mohawk

Prekop is a former member of jazz-infused indie rock band The Sea and Cake, which fans of the late 90s era of indie rock will remember fondly. He’ll be supported by Austin artist Abram Shook, who we’ve repeatedly touted as one of the city’s best acts. Tickets here.

2. Guantanamo Baywatch – June 4th – Hotel Vegas

There’s something to be said for not taking yourself too seriously, and Guantanamo Baywatch are masters of this life lesson. Mellow out this summer by starting June off with these crooning garage rockers at their Hotel Vegas show. Dig their recently released video for “Too Late” below.

3. The Sonics – June 14th – Red 7

This one really shouldn’t need an explanation. The Sonics are among the godfathers of punk and garage rock. I’m talking pre-Ramones, pre-Sex Pistols. Don’t miss the opportunity to see these legends! Texas heroes Sons of Hercules open. Tickets here.

4. Great Lake Swimmers & The Weather Station – June 16th – The Parish

A pair of bands both bent on creating elegant and beautiful folk songs. There’s a brooding restrained power in these late night lullabies. These acts are perfectly paired and not to be missed for fans of contemporary indie folk. Tickets here.

5. Bully w/ Best Coast – June 23 – Emo’s

Bully creates lean garage pop, and while I’m excited to catch the always enjoyable headliner Best Coast, I must admit that Bully is the more exciting, fresher voice. Best Coast fans will find a lot to like in these similarly-minded up-and-comers. Tickets here.
