We were totally ecstatic when we first heard the newest single from the Dirty Projector’s forthcoming album, Swing Lo Magellan (details here). The track is one of the most outstanding of the year so far, and now, the group has released a video for the single directed by their own Dave Longstreth. As might be expected, the video is equal parts beauty and oddity. In the video, we see rotating shots of members of the band who sing, standing in silhouette against a vibrant backdrop of ever-shifting colors. Mirroring the slow build of the song, their persons are slowly, increasingly illuminated until we see them clearly when the song hits its climax. The video (and the song) recalls modern minimalist artists such as Dan Flavin or Donald Judd with its use of simplicity, color, light, and shadow. It’s a straightforward video, but definitely worth watching.
